Ludwika i Henryk Gropplerowie / Bożena Sabat. W: Rocznik Muzeum Narodowego w Kielcach. T. 38 (2023), s. 67-110.
The collection of the Gallery of Polish Painting and European Decorative Arts features a notable selection of works by Rafał Hadziewicz. Most of these are portraits of close and distant members of the well-known Jaroński family from Kielce, with whom the painter was related. Among them, two portraits of Ludwika Groppler hold a special place. Her story began on June 12, 1814, when a widower, Błażej Głowacki, an organist and piano manufacturer, married Agnieszka Rzechak, a widow from Kraków who was 27 years his junior. They had six daughters: Anastazja, Aniela, Jadwiga, Tekla, Ludwika (actually Katarzyna Ludwika), and Stefania. Anastazja became the wife of the famous painter Rafał Hadziewicz, Ludwika married Henryk Groppler, a cousin of Jan Matejko, and Stefania married the composer, Feliks Jaroński.
Henryk Groppler was born in Kraków into a Protestant family of watchmakers and jewelers. In the summer of 1850, the Gropplers moved to Istanbul, where Henryk amassed a great fortune, among other ventures, through boracite. It is said that, as wealthy individuals, the Gropplers helped many Poles in the East.
