Summary: The article presents a thesis that Fulcher from Chartres used a motif from "Bellum Judaicum" by a Jewish historian Flavius Josephus in his description of the siege of Jerusalem. As he did not take part in this event of the first crusade, he must have taken advantage of other written sources such as "Gesta Francorum or Historia Francorum" by Raymond of Aguilers. Fulcher's depiction is concurrent with Flavius Josephus' in terms of the place and content as well as the vocabulary he used. The classical education of the chronicler is also apparent as he embellishes his stories a lot. Thus, the descriptions of slashing the bellies of the dead enemies by the Francs might have been Fulcher's literary invention and not a depiction of the real crusaders' acts.
