Summary: The Thirty Years' War was a severely traumatic experience for Pomerania. Although most of the towns and villages were not involved in the military actions, the marches and quarters of the Imperial German and Swedish troops, provisioning obligations, rapes and robberies committed by them contributed to the impoverishment of the population of the Duchy. It also caused an economic and demographic decline of the whole country (i.a. because of a few epidemics of infectious diseases). It also concerns Szczecinek, a town situated in the south-west of the Duchy of Pomerania near the border with Poland. Szczecinek provided quarters first for the Imperial troops and then for the Swedish army since December 1627. Only in the years 1627-1630, the cost of the quarters, provisions, robberies and requisitions was estimated at 25 thousand thalers. After the Thirty Years' War had ended, half of the town plots in Szczecinek were empty and the number of its inhabitants decreased by nearly 50% from 1550 to about 700-800 people. The town ceased to be an important economic centre.
