Summary: In the initial period, following a forced resettlement to the Gdańsk voivodeship during the Operation Vistula, the Ukrainian community was forbidden to cultivate their own language, religion and culture. Regardless of difficult living conditions, unfavorable nationality policy pursued by the Communist authorities and hostile attitude of certain members of Polish society, the Ukrainians strived to preserve their culture, traditions and native language. Thereby, they attempted to protect their Ukrainian identity from merging into the model of a nationally homogenous state. Meanwhile, establishment of the Ukrainian Social and Cultural Association (UTSK) was perceived as an opportunity to expand Ukrainian education, as this task stemmed from its statutory provisions. Thus, this article is aimed at describing the process by which the Ukrainian minority strived to satisfy its basic national, cultural, and educational needs, which were undertaken and carried out - admittedly with varying degrees of success - in the emerging Ukrainian language educational facilities.
