Summary: The aim of the article is to present the relations of Latvia and Poland in the summer and autumn of 1920, with a view to the internment in Latvia of the soldiers of the Polish 18th Lancers Regiment, who were forced to cross the border on 5 July by the Red Army offensive. In total, several hundred Polish soldiers from Latvia, with the consent and coordination of the Latvian authorities, were sent to Poland via the port of Gdansk. The stay of Polish soldiers in Latvia was in a very difficult and at the same time glorious period for Poland - in the summer and autumn of 1920, and it is an important aspect in Latvian-Polish relations in the interwar period. They were complicated, but generally correct. Important elements of these relations also include the stay of several hundred Polish Armed Forces soldiers in Latvia. Mostly they were single soldiers of various units who found refuge in Latvia during the Red Army offensive. The only complete unit of the Polish Army in Latvia was the 1st Squadron of the 18th Lancers Regiment. It should be noted that the accounts of Latvian sources differ from the versions of events presented in Polish materials, therefore both are used in this article. The attitude of the Latvian authorities towards Polish soldiers in the discussed period was favorable and even welcoming. The exception was the attempt to take over the horses of the aforementioned regiment, which was explained by the efforts of the Latvian military authorities to compensate for the expenses for the maintenance of Polish soldiers and to facilitate their transport within Latvia in July, 1920. The article is supplemented with memories of Latvian soldiers (unknown for Polish scientists) about the tragic crossing of the Dvina by the same Squadron to the Latvian side on July 5, 1920.
