Summary: The paper focuses on three ordinances issues by the Wrocław city council in the 1520s. Each of them concerned the question of beggars and the poor. Analysing these sources, and then collating them with each other and highlighting similarities and differences allowed for observing changes in regard of defining and understanding poverty and begging. The approach of the secular authorities to helping those in need evolved analogically, which had an influence on decision made by the council and the projected models of support and care. Aclose observation and analysis of the authorities’ actions leads to aconclusion that the main reason for the introduced changes and modernisations were the concepts of Reformation– which in turn could be used by the city council in expanding their power. Sources that are the basis of this paper include passages showing religious attitudes and positions adopted by the secular authorities in Wrocław.
