Wiosną tego roku w gdańskim wydawnictwie słowo/obraz terytoria ukazał się pierwszy tom książki Krzysztofa Pomiana Muzeum. Historia światowa. Jest to in- auguracja polskiej edycji monumentalnego trzytomowego dzieła opublikowanego przez Éditions Gallimard w Paryżu, pierwszego opracowania powszechnej historii muzeum. To więcej niż książka, to pomnik! (Plus qu’un livre, un monument!) – napisał Fabien Simode w miesięczniku „l’Œil” (marzec 2021). Dziś tak szeroko zakrojone prace historyczne istotnie nie są częste, być może z obawy autorów przed postmodernistyczną metanarracją. W tym wypadku pod względem chronologicznym, geograficznym, a także problemo- wym ma ona charakter całościowej syntezy. Omawiany tu tom Od skarbca do muzeum, oddany właśnie do rąk polskie- go czytelnika, dotyczy procesu krystalizacji europejskiego kolekcjonerstwa i będących jego konsekwencją pierwszych muzeów, głównie włoskich i kilku północnych, od Muzeum Kapitolińskiego w Rzymie (1471) po British Museum w Londynie (1753). W przygotowaniu są już jednak następne tomy. Drugi z tytułem L’ancrage européen, 1789–1850 oma- wia historię budowania się muzeum jako trwałego i waż- nego elementu kultury europejskiej, bliskiego instytucjom, które znamy obecnie historię tę rozpoczyna rewolucyjny Luwr (1793), a składa się na nią większość najgłośniejszych dziś muzeów Europy Zachodniej. Tom trzeci wreszcie, A la conquête du monde, 1850–2020, jest najobszerniejszy tak pod względem zakresu chronologicznego i terytorialnego, jak i omawianych w jego ramach instytucji i ich działalności. Rozważania autora obejmują tu ekspansję muzeum na Europę Środkową wraz z Rosją, a potem na resztę świata, Azję, Afrykę, obie Ameryki, w tym głównie obszary powiąza- ne z Zachodem więzami kolonialnymi, a także osobno ujęte Stany Zjednoczone, gdzie uformowało się dominujące w dzisiejszym świecie centrum muzealne. W tym momencie tytuł książki – historia światowa – staje się niejako pełny, a odnosi się on tu i do lat międzywojennych w świecie demokratycz- nym oraz totalitarnym, i II wojny światowej, i długiej epoki współczesności. Abstract: In spring 2023, the Gdansk publishers: słowo/ obraz terytoria released the first volume of Krzysztof Pomian’s study Muzeum. Historia światowa [World History of the Museum]. It launches the Polish edition of the monumental three-volume work published by Éditions Gallimard in Paris which is the first study of the universal history of the museum. This is more than a book, it’s a monument! (Plus qu’un livre, un monument!) is what Fabien Simode wrote in the l’Œil monthly (March 2021). At present rarely are such historically broad studies released, possibly because of authors’ fear of being potentially accused of postmodernist meta-narrative. In this case, the work is a comprehensive synthesis in view of the entailed chronology, geography, and thematic range. The discussed volume Od skarbca do muzeum [From a Treasure Chamber to the Museum] recently published for Polish read- ers tackles the process of European collectorship crystalizing and first museums being its consequence, mainly Italian and several northern ones, from the Capitoline Museum in Rome (1471) up to London’s British Museum (1753). Subsequent volumes are already being prepared. Titled L’ancrage euro- péen, 1789–1850, the second one is dedicated to the history of the museum consolidating into a permanent and signifi- cant element of European culture, close to the institution we know today: started by the revolutionary Louvre (1793), this history is created by the vast part of the major museums of today’s Western Europe. Finally, volume three A la conquête du monde, 1850–2020 is the most extensive of them all both chronologically and territorially, as well as in view of the num- ber of museums and their activity discussed. Author’s consid- erations encompass museums’ expansion to Eastern Europe including Russia, and then eventually to the rest of the world: Asia, Africa, both Americas, mainly the territories connected with the West through colonial bonds; the United States, be- ing the area where today’s dominating world centres have been formed, is analysed separately. At that point the book’s title: world history, gains its full relevance, and relates both to the interwar period in the democratic and totalitarian world, WW II, and to the long contemporary era.
