Summary: The first hospitals in the German city were established outside the part of the city surrounded by walls. They were foundation hospitals that served as shelters or isolation wards. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a 40‑bed hospital of the Holy Spirit was opened at Hospitalstraße (today Tuwim Street) and another with a similar half‑timbered structure of St. George. Four semi‑church buildings (chapels) were built in their surroundings, of which only one remains today - St. George. Due to the constantly increasing number of infectious diseases, a small hospital was opened in 1832 at Schmiedestraße 41 (today Kiliński Street), which, after the opening of a new, impressive complex at An der Plantage (Obrońców Wybrzeża Street) in 1904, was transformed into the Supply Office. At the turn of 1901‑1902, patients were moved to the newly constructed building on Amtstraße (now Kopernik Street) along with equipment from the liquidated and demolished first hospitals of the Holy Spirit and St. George. The new hospital complexes on Amtstraße and An der Plantage were expanded with additional buildings. Over the years, the buildings were renovated many times and adapted to changing needs. Among the expanded, impressive hospital buildings, there were also smaller health care facilities in the city and in the countryside. They were used for medical purposes by the Red Army soldiers even after the arrival of new settlers. Some buildings are still used for hospital services to this day. The technical documentation of the buildings, analyzed in the article, together with a description of their functioning, allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the German achievements taken over by Poles later on. The personal presentation of German doctors, dentists and pharmacists from 1938 can be used to compare the state of medical personnel in the post‑war period. The article uses archival documents, studies and the press.
