Summary: In the 19th century, Turkish Macedonia was an arena of conflict between Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian and Macedonian interests. Ottoman policy was based on countering the centrifugal tendencies in the Balkans, among other things by playing off different ethnic groups and their associated Orthodox churches against each other. The article also shows the relationship between Turkish administrative reforms in Macedonia and the situation of the mainly rural population there.
